Dachshunds come in three types of coats and two sizes. Sweetly is a standard size, wirehaired Dachshund. At 4 months, she was already more than 12 pounds and still has some more growing to do. She came from a kill shelter, so we don't know IF she is mixed with something else, but her looks as well as her temperament suggest she is all Dachshund.
Do you know that the German word Dachshund actually means badger dog? This is because in Germany, Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers and foxes. The wiener dog's long body and short legs come in very handy when it goes underground to chase out or fight its prey. They also help in the hunt of deer and wild boar. So, despite their smaller size, Dachshunds are brave, feisty hunting dogs that don't know how small they are.
Sweetly is fostered with bigger dogs. At adoption shows, she prefers to roughhouse with the Pitbulls, Shepherds and one day she played with a Doberman weighing 95 pounds. She would make the perfect dog for someone with a big dog, looking to add another canine, but not a big one. She can go with a small dog, too, but the other dog can not be too timid.
There are cats at her foster home and she wants to play with them, but doesn't try to hurt them.
She likes to play fetch and go on long walks (as a hunting dog, she has a lot of stamina), but is not meant to be a running partner due to her short legs.
She is just a very playful dog. She would not make a good dog for families with young kids because she tries to jump up and nip when she is excited. That behavior is hard to control or correct for small children.
It is so cute to watch her run around the backyard, the long body on the short legs, ears flying back...
Come meet Sweetly - there are not too many wirehaired Dachshunds around. You will get a unique little friend.
