Family Service of Lake County is seeking a well-qualified individual to serve as a Bilingual Family Advocate for our Nuestro Center (family welcome center) programming.SUPERVISOR: Nuestro Center SupervisorWORK SCHEDULE: 20 hours per week, with programming taking place Monday – Friday afternoons. Some evening hours will be required.JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Work directly with the children and families of Nuestro CenterProvide direct service to support program activities of the CenterCollaborate with other service providers in the countyOther duties as assignedHomework Club:Tutor 1st through 5th grade students, ensuring that they receive appropriate support with homework, reading and journaling.Assist Center Supervisor in planning educational and recreational activities for Homework Club participants.Communicate with students' teachers regarding student progress, educational needs, grades and homework.Provide additional educational support to students, such as supplying worksheets on subject matter that students are struggling with.Assist in Homework Club duties prior to and after HWC such as distribution of snacks and clean-up of Center.Present information on Homework Club/Nuestro Verano to school personnel and community organizations.Maintain communication with parents about upcoming events. Along with Supervisor, schedule and meet with parents for student conferences.Recruit volunteers at high school, universities and other forums.Support training of volunteers and interns, focusing on how best to work with youth, ensuring that they are familiar with current educational concepts and technology used by schools.Assist Supervisor with volunteer oversight. Obtain daily “Volunteer Wrap Up” feedback from volunteers for updates on students’ progress and challenges, as well as program’s effectiveness.Maintain supervision and discipline of children during all Homework Club sessions.Data entry, including but not limited to student & volunteer attendance and food bank data collection.Create publicity sheets and information for stakeholders.Nuestro Verano Summer Camp:Provide summer camp programming, giving 1st – 5th grade children opportunities for constructive physical activity and educational enrichment.Assist Center Supervisor in planning educational/fun activities for Nuestro Verano participants.Support supervision of and training of interns and volunteers, focusing on how best to work with youth.Track attendance.Help with the distribution of food and snacks.Create publicity sheets and information for stakeholdersAdult/Senior Citizen Programming:Support volunteers’ needs as they provide programming and food to senior citizens.Maintain communication with program participants and organize educational sessions for adults.Track attendance.QUALIFICATIONS:- Fluency in English and Spanish- Experience working with children- Outgoing personality- Patience in teaching- Creativity in making learning fun- Education background preferred- Knowledge of MS Office with experience using ExcelPHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
